The Critical Importance of Quality Armed Security for Jewellery Shops: A Case Study of the Tanishq Arrah Robbery

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Introduction

Jewellery retailers operate within a unique landscape fraught with significant risks due to the nature of their high-value inventory. The recent robbery at Tanishq’s jewellery showroom in Bihar highlights these risks.

As establishments that house precious goods, ranging from diamonds to gold, jewellery shops have become prime targets for criminal activities, particularly theft and robbery. The allure of valuables attracts deceptive tactics from criminals. Therefore, it is absolutely critical for such retailers to employ the multiple reliable armed security guards at their showrooms.

Jewellery Store Robberies on the Rise in India

Jewellery store heists in India have seen a worrying uptick over the last few years. The insurer Aviva has warned customers that high-end jewellery thefts in the country have gone up by 43% between 2022-23.This data highlights the dire need for adequate security guards.

This author aims to delve deeper into security concerns by examining specific incidents, including the recent Tanishq Arrah robbery in Bihar, which took place on March 10, 2025.

The Tanishq Arrah Robbery: A Case in Point

On 10th March 2025, the Tanishq jewellery store in Arrah, Bihar, was subjected to a meticulously orchestrated robbery that sent shockwaves through the country.

Six masked men, pretending to be customers, entered the premises at 10:30 am. Tanishq does not let more than four customers enter at a time so first four of the robbers entered as a group followed by the remaining two. The pair pointed a pistol at the sole guard and snatched his rifle. They continued to seize the phones of the staff and proceeded to loot both floors of the showroom, making away on motorbikes with a whopping Rs 25 crore!

Security measures at the Tanishq store, while decent, proved inadequate in thwarting the assailants. What was required was multiple armed guards BOTH at the entrance, as well as, inside the premises—on both floors.

Understaffing heightens Risk of Theft in Jewellery Stores

Certainly, every establishment prefers to conserve costs by limiting manpower. But in the case of jewellery stores, it is counterproductive to understaff armed security! If this Tanishq outlet had placed two armed guards instead of one, the robbers would not have managed to overpower them as easily. Furthermore, if armed guards were present inside (and on the first floor) as well, it would have been nearly impossible to even attempt the robbery.

Armed security guards undergo rigorous training that covers a variety of scenarios. This ensures that they can respond effectively in emergency situations. This training encompasses not only firearms proficiency but also conflict de-escalation techniques and extensive knowledge of security protocols. These professionals are equipped to assess threats in real-time. They provide a visible deterrent to criminals.

As a call to action, it is vital for jewellery retailers to prioritise their investment in reliable security solutions.

Hiring multiple and quality armed security guards can greatly reduce the likelihood of incidents such as the one that took place at Tanishq.
